Best Bluegrass Band 2023!
Vocals, Guitar
I grew up listening to my Dad, Jan Strock, playing bluegrass music on the back patio at
my childhood home and became hooked on music at a very young age. My Dad started
giving me guitar lessons at the age of 11, and shortly after I discovered that I had a bit
of a knack for singing as well. By the age of 15, I was playing and singing in any talent
show or open music venue that I could find. The Capital Theatre in my hometown of
Chambersburg, PA lent me some amazing opportunities to play in front of larger live
audiences, performing regularly at the Appalachian Jubilee country variety show. By
the age of 20 I had formed a hybrid rock/country band that played around the region at
a lot of the veterans and social clubs. In my later 20's I began to focus more on singer
song writer acoustic and folk music and began doing more solo and duet shows. I then
met my husband Robb at an open mic in Winchester, VA where I was living at the time
and we became a permanent duet from there! I was surprised to come across a
musical soulmate who also had a fondness for old timey bluegrass music. My biggest
vocal influences include Patsy Cline, Gillian Welch and Stevie Nicks. My all time
musical bluegrass heroes include Ricky Skaggs, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. My Daddy
loves to tell the story about how he took me to meet them when I was a baby and I sat
on their laps in their tour bus :)
Vocals, Mandoilin
I'm blessed to call Stone House Breakdown family and great friends! I learned
bluegrass at the Jerseytown Tavern in Jerseytown PA. My teenage friends and I would
travel to the Jerseytown Tavern from our hometown of Danville, PA on Wednesday nights to gather
around the microphone hanging from the ceiling. Most of my influence comes from
those cowboy tunes of the Grateful Dead and Old & In the Way. I learned to love a
good Stanley Brother's number as well. I moved to Winchester, Virginia and performed
at bluegrass jams in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I love to drive to Waynesboro, PA for
the Beck and Benedict's Hardware Jams. My wife Jena and I met at an open mic in
Winchester. A match made in heaven!
Vocals, Fiddle
My music history includes a strong classical background on piano and viola/violin and
was later seasoned with a desire to really have some fun! I keep current with classical
skills in by playing in local symphonies, chamber music and weddings. For the last five
years or so it has been a privilege to add Bluegrass, Irish and Folk styles to my fiddle
repertoire and I enjoy playing along with the excellent musicians in Stone House
Breakdown, Abigail’s Garden and Susquehanna Trio. The ukulele and guitar have
become my latest musical additions which add some nice chord/rhythm base when
needed. I also love a good piano and will play whenever it’s an option. My musical
influences began with sappy 70’s songs, any folk music, and a brief infatuation with
country music. I currently am amazed by artists like Michael Cleveland, Vassar
Clements, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle and Sierra Ferrell and am developing an awesome
appreciation for traditional Bluegrass! My background also includes working as an RN
and I've gathered a great appreciation for the healing aspects of music. So much
music, so little time!
Vocals, Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Bass, Dobro,
I grew up with musicians and music lovers in my family and was exposed to a variety of musical genres at a young age. My love for music led me to the piano, then I served as our High School first chair trumpet in marching and symphonic band. Meanwhile, I learned guitar and stringed instruments as a teenager with my Grandfather and his old Mel Bay lesson book. My sound is acoustic folk/bluegrass/country/rock/jazz.
I love performing solo and in groups on the Guitar, Mandolin, Bass, and Fiddle.
My music is a reflection of my life experiences and emotions. I am constantly experimenting with different chord progressions and melodies, and I let my intuition guide me when it comes to songwriting and performing. I believe that the best music comes from the heart.
Vocals, Banjo
I’ve been playing Scruggs style Banjo for about 16 yrs and never looked back. I grew
up in Harrisburg, Pa. Not really a bluegrass scene, so I owe my love of Bluegrass music
to my Mom and Dad who listened to it alot. With early influences from Dan Fogelberg,
listening to the High Country Snows album when I was a kid. And picking up a good ear
for the music with Old and In The Way when I was a teenager. I then ventured in with
Flat and Scruggs, Tony Rice and JD Crowe and the New South. And a love for Sonny
Osborne’s Picking style to pick up licks, and develop my Banjo style. I had all the right
moves, and my Banjo teacher finally said, "You gotta learn some songs now." I dived
into the Scruggs catalogue, ventured into some Alan Munde Tunes and spanned my
horizons to a whole new level. It has been a great time learning and trying to master this
instrument. I love playing the Banjo for you fine folk, and I hope to do it for you for a
long time. God Bless.
Bass
Playing music has been my main interest for as long as I can remember. My family was
very musical with sisters that played piano and the coolest brother ever played guitar
and sang in a Country Band. I knew that I would someday play music in a band. My first
chance to do that was in Junior High when I landed a spot in the School Band as a
Drummer. That lead me into a Drum and Bugle Corp. where I developed drum skills and
where I met my lovely wife, Mary Jane. At age fourteen I discovered the Drum Kit and
Rock and Roll, and by age fifteen I was working in local bands. In my twenties I was
working in a popular Country Band, where I became a fan of the fiddle. I wanted to play
fiddle so I found a good old fiddle and started lessons at Eaken School of Piano and
Violin Theory . After about four years of hard work and practice an hour and a half every
day, I was ready to bring the fiddle into my act with a popular Southern Rock Band
where I was a Drummer. I got to play fiddle on Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker Band,
and some classic fiddle tunes such as Orange Blossom Special, and Black Mountain
Rag. Around that same time I was asked to play fiddle in a local Bluegrass Band. That
went fairly well but by accident I found that I was a better fit for the Bass spot. The
Drummer in me and the and the musician I had become was the perfect combination of
skills to be successful in that spot.
Then came my opportunity to play for my daughter Jena, and son in law Robb Bomboy
in their newly founded Stone House Breakdown band where I was afforded the privilege
of playing Bass for the Best Bluegrass Band in Central PA. with family and best friends,
Tish Brown and Patrick McDonald. For me, a dream come true!
Old Stone House Road in Monroe Township, Cumberland County PA.
This is Robb and Jena's way home.
We named the band after this beautiful countryside leading across the Cumberland Valley to South Mountain.
